The Pittsfield Project

As seen on

LISCO Transformations was entrusted with restoring the historic marble surfaces inside the iconic Pittsfield Building in downtown Chicago, IL. This landmark property, known for its art deco architecture and intricate interior details, required a careful balance of preservation and performance. Our team’s role was to revive worn, stained, and dulled marble while honoring the building’s original character and the expectations of modern tenants and visitors.

Restoration process

  • Surface preparation:
    • Protection: Adjacent finishes, thresholds, and fixtures were masked and protected.
    • Cleaning: We used professional-grade, stone-safe cleaners to remove surface soils, residues, and old maintenance products.
  • Mechanical restoration:
    • Grinding and honing: Where needed, we mechanically honed the marble to remove deep scratches, etching, and lippage, restoring a flat, even surface.
    • Polishing: Using progressively finer abrasives, we brought the marble back to a refined, consistent sheen appropriate for a historic commercial interior.
  • Stain and etch treatment:
    • Targeted repairs: Stains and localized etching were treated with appropriate practices and spot-honing techniques to blend seamlessly with surrounding stone.
    • Crack and chip repair: Minor chips and fissures were filled and color-matched to preserve both appearance and integrity.
  • Sealing and protection:
    • Penetrating sealer: A high-quality, breathable sealer was applied to help protect against future staining while allowing the stone to perform naturally.
    • Slip-conscious finish: We balanced visual polish with practical slip resistance, mindful of lobby and corridor traffic.
